A new style of beer from New Belgium Brewing Co. incorporates a very unusual ingredient.

The Hemperor HPA is a 7 percent ABV HPA—which stands for Hemp Pale Ale—brewed with hops and hemp, which is the fiber of the cannabis sativa plant that is used to make various products, including ropes, clothing and paper. There have been a number of ales brewed with hemp in the past from other breweries, including Fitger’s Homegrown Hempen Ale, Humboldt Brown and Mancäve Hippie Joe.

“With the popularity of hoppy beers, our brewers are always on the lookout for different hop varieties, and the complexities and flavor nuances new strains can bring,” reads a post on New Belgium’s website. “That’s where hemp comes into the picture.

Without getting too nerdy, we found a unique way to recreate hemp terpene flavors in a beer, which compliment hop flavors in a brand new, delicious way—not to mention this beer is extremely dank. The flavors and aromas are so unique that it’s a style unto itself, hence HPA.”

According to New Belgium, The Hemperor HPA will be packaged in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles that are scheduled to be shipped to retailers across the brewery’s distribution network in “late May.”
