South Dakota lawmakers will debate allowing people to grow and sell industrial hemp.

Rep. Mike Verchio (R-District 30) filed House Bill 1054 which – if signed into law – would classify hemp as an oilseed if it has no more than three-tenths of 1 percent tetrahydrocannabinol.
If that criterion is met, anyone in South Dakota could plant, possess, sell and buy the industrial hemp.
Industrial hemp can be used to produce textiles, paper, biofuels and plastics.
