JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri Senator Rob Schaaf, St. Joseph, has proposed a change to way hemp is classified in the Show-Me State.
Senate Bill 255 would allow residents to grow and cultivate industrial hemp, if they meet certain guidelines.
The bill would exempt industrial hemp, less than 3/10th of a percent of THC, from the list of controlled substances and the definition of marijuana.
Schaaf says hemp is used to make about 50,000 products and has benefits.
"Hemp used to be the number one industry in Missouri. Hemp is a rapidly growing plant. It chokes out other weeds," said the Republican Senator.
Hemp is part of the cannabis plant but does not have the active ingredient in marijuana.
