ANNVILLE, Pa. - Local legislators, doctors and interested citizens gathered Wednesday evening at a town hall held at Lebanon Valley College to discuss and educate the public on two bills currently in the State Senate to legalize medicinal marijuana and industrial hemp.

Republican Senator Mike Folmer from Lebanon County led the town hall. He kicked off the event saying that the purpose of the evening would be to break down "fears and trepidation" of the word "marijuana." He added that education was necessary for the public on what medical cannabis is all about. Lieutenant Governor Mike Stack spoke to the true bipartisanship of this issue, saying, "It just seemed so clear that medical cannabis has vital purpose."

Two mothers of children with seizure disorders spoke about studies and cases they've discovered of medical marijuana being able to eliminate seizures from the afflicted. Both mothers feel that legalized medicines and diet regiments are not working for their children.

Democrat Senator Daylin Leach of Montgomery County applauded the dedication shown by Senator Folmer saying, "Doing something controversial is not something people look to do." Senator Leach added that he believed medical marijuana could benefit sufferers of seizures, cancer, multiple sclerosis and PTSD.

Senate Bill 3 currently has 26 sponsors. Democrat Senator Judy Schwank of Berks County, who is the sponsor of Senate Bill 50, spoke on the importance of legalizing industrial hemp. "What's important in Berks County is agriculture," said Schwank.

The senators emphasized on the profitability of growing hemp for local farmers, as well as hemp's ability to restore soil. Speakers emphasized the difference between hemp and marijuana.

Hemp is multi-functional and can be used for its oils and wood-like stems, among other uses. Senate Bill 50 currently has 12 sponsors.
