U.S. SEN. Cory Gardner supports congressional legislation to legalize industrial hemp for safe commercial uses. The Colorado Republican backs a bipartisan bill that would remove industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana under the federal Controlled Substances Act.
“Industrial hemp is a safe substance with many practical commercial applications,” he said. “Removing it from the Controlled Substances Act is a common sense move which would create jobs and get the government out of the way of farmers and our agricultural industry.”
Sen. Gardner is from the rural farming community of Yuma and endorses the potential for hemp as a cash crop across agricultural areas, such as Colorado’s Eastern Plains and Lower Arkansas Valley.
At least 19 states have legalized industrial hemp.
The pending congressional bill would remove the threat of federal anti-drug enforcement from farmers who cultivate industrial hemp. It’s a path toward developing the farm and commercial applications of a crop that, coincidentally, doesn’t require much water to grow.
