COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)- A controversial plant is gaining popularity in the palmetto state.
The South Carolina Hemp Association gathered Sunday to discuss growing cannabis. They say, hemp could be a potential money maker in South Carolina.
Those opposed to farming the plant say it can be used for more than just industrial goods. It is legal to grow cannabis in the state of South Carolina, but unclear how a person goes about doing so, considering its illegal to possess seeds or go over a 0.3 THC level.
The Hemp Association is pushing House Resolution 525, The Industrial Hemp Farming Act, if this goes through hemp would be de-scheduled on a federal level.
"We don’t have to worry about the federal government getting involved on state policies it allows the states to enact their own laws,” says Janel Ralph who attended the meeting.
Her daughter Harmony suffers from Lissencephaly, which causes her to have multiple seizures a day. Janel has used Hemp as a medicine for her daughter’s disease, and her seizure count has gone down tremendously.
Some law makers are shaky about pushing this resolution for the fear that people will grow marijuana and disguise it as hemp. People like Janel only want to grow it for their child.
