Meet the traders popping up at Cardiff's Street Food Circus

By Kate Rees

From beach burgers to burritos and everything in between, here's what you can tuck into at the Street Food Circus

A movable feast of artisan food traders, vintage trailers, chefs and mixologists will be in the capital this summer as part of Cardiff’s Street Food Circus.
Setting up camp at the Old Stable Yard on John Street every weekend in May and June, the outdoor food festival even comes complete with a big top diner for communal eating.
So ahead of the culinary circus coming to town, we met some of the traders who’ll be popping up at the event.

What’s your style of food?

The Hemp Hut is a funky mobile café serving up delicious healthy, veggie goodness! Our menu is ever changing, depending on what’s in season, and what inspires us to cook. We offer an eclectic mix of foods inspired by our travels and incorporate hemp into them, in the form of oil, flour or the seeds themselves.

What’s your signature dish?

The Hemp Hut wants to offer the healthy option at festivals, promoting fresh, tasty, homemade food that will energise and refuel festival folk. As we are new to the streets, our falafel wrap is the one thing that has been tempting people’s taste buds. Making our own falafel, served in an authentic Lebanese wrap with spicy harissa sauce, hempy street salad, tahini yoghurt and fresh salad leaves.

What makes you special?

We want to enlighten the taboo of hemp being associated with its sister plant and shout about the health benefits of hemp which have been used for generations and in many cultures, all around the world!
By creating and developing innovative recipes, we intend to inspire and encourage people to delight in this ‘super food’. Food is nature’s medicine and together we’re on a mission to try and make a difference and encourage people that eating healthy doesn’t have to be tasteless and boring.

What do you love about the street food way of life?

Being festival caterers, we love being on the road, and having the freedom to travel to where the people are. We love creating dishes that encourage people to share and enjoy food together. Street food attracts people who love food, and enjoy talking about it, which in turn will encourage more and more people to embrace the street food revolution!
