HEMP HAS FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES, BUT NO CROP INSURANCE: This could be the year that industrial hemp gets the green light in the United States, but don’t expect the cash crop to replace those amber waves of grain in the near term.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), along with 46 bipartisan co-sponsors, late on Wednesday introduced the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, H.R. 525, a bill that would make the crop legal to plant by removing it from the federal list of controlled substances. Massie’s bill joins a companion, S. 134, introduced Jan. 8 by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) with three co-sponsors.
This isn’t the first time Congress will consider the legalization of hemp. The two bills are repeats of measures introduced in the last session. But now industrial hemp has a friend in a more prominent position: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The full story for Pros is here: http://politico.pro/1yIIxyK
