HEMP seed appears to be having a real impact in carp fishing at the moment.

Several of our local matches were won by feeding the hemp seed as ground bait and then fishing other baits over the top of it.
There can be no doubt that hemp seed is a real attractor, just ask anyone who used to fish the River Trent several years ago.
It was part of a river fisher’s armament when fed as a ground bait and casters or maggots were fished over the top of it.
Few anglers fished it on the hook, it was more of a hook bait on the canals than anywhere else, where, again, it was a superb killing bait, especially where roach were concerned.
In Burton Veterans’ latest match, fished at Robin Wood Fishery at Ingleby, winner John Adams put down a bed of hemp and then fished the pole with pellet over the top of it.
The result was a narrow win, with an allcarp net that weighed 34lb 8oz.
In contrast, Dave Sherratt fished worm over a bed of luncheon meat and took a superb net of ide that weighed 31lb 4oz — again all caught on the pole.
However, the real battle was for the next places, which were separated by just an ounce at the end of the match.
Virtually every match this season has seen Bob Dean taking either fifth or sixth place.
This time it was different as his mixed bag of carp and ide saw him narrowly squeak into third place ahead of Roy Bumstead, who had an all-carp net on the feeder. He beat him by just an ounce — 26lb 7oz to 26lb 6oz.
On the same venue but on lake four, Julian Warrington won his own sponsored league match in runway style with a weight of 54lb 9oz.
He started off fishing close in to the margins, picking up crucians on the pellet.
After a couple of hours, he switched lines to 11 metres and continued to catch bigger carp that averaged over 2lb apiece.
Runner-up Dave Glover weighed in just 12lb 5oz having lost seven carp in the reed beds. This time sweetcorn was the bait.
Third place went to Pete Shrigley with 12lb exactly — all carp caught on pellet fished over paste.
Mount Pleasant Angling Club fished their seventh match of the season at Thorpe Constantine, and it produced a seventh different winner.
That man was Dave Highton with an excellent 63lb 10oz net of carp which he caught fishing very close to the margins.
He picked up fish straight from the off and continued to pick them off all through the match.
Last week’s winner, Mark Newman, secured second place with a level 58lb, while Kev Green finished in third place for the second week running, this time with 51lb 11oz — just an ounce ahead of Jeff Eardley.
