With the medicinal benefits well documented for treating chronic pain and terminal conditions, the wellness world is now catching on. Yes, marijuana is finally shunning its 420 reputation.
Pot-infused foods, products and other goods that bottle the plant’s much-buzzed-about healing benefits are coming in hot, with hemp at the top of the list. Heralded as one of the next big superfoods (due to its high nutritional content), hemp seeds may soon be a regular staple in your pantry.
Nutrition aside, it’s just as good for your skin and hair. The rising trend has seen new beauty products formulated with hemp seed oil vying for a spot on your bathroom shelf. Rich in omega and amino acids, as well as vitamins A, E, and C, hemp oil works its magic as a rich, topical moisturizer.
Although rest easy that you can leave your brother’s bong flashbacks in high school. These beauty products won’t get you high as they use non-psychoactive extracts from the plant – most notably, cannabidiol (CBD) as opposed to the psychoactive compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). A growing body of scientific research shows CBD has the power to reduce anxiety and stress, lower inflammation, relax the body, lift the mood and improve skin’s texture.
And science agrees. According to research published in the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, cannabinoids not only have anti-aging and antioxidant properties, but they’re also responsible for lipid production which helps regulate conditions like dry skin and acne. Another study, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, found cannabidiol has the potential for helping skin diseases when applied topically.
So does that mean we’ll see cannabis-laced products on department store beauty counters? Not quite yet. Even still, the research is there to back up the reefer if you’re taking a trip down the beauty aisle of your local health food shop.
