INTERNATIONAL experts will gather in Geelong as the city hosts the country’s first industrial hemp conference.

As the fledgling industry aims to explode after getting the long-awaited green light for edible products this month, growers and researchers are organising the four-day event.

Dr Stuart Gordon, the team leader of CSIRO’s natural fibres team, said the conference would provide information and access to a growing network of people involved in the sector.

“The conference is being held in Geelong because of its agricultural and engineering expertise and growing interest in the production and processing of hemp products,” Dr Gordon said.

“There are large growers located in the region’s south-west of the city planning to increase their areas sown to the crop.

“Within the city, there is key public and private expertise in grain and fibre processing to value-add to the crop.”

A start-up processing firm, Australian Primary Hemp, has already begun operating a warehouse in Newtown.

The company is selling hemp oil and protein, with hulled seeds to follow in the New Year.

The conference, to be held from February 27 — March 2, will hear from speakers from the USA, Canada and Europe.

Representatives of the CSIRO, Deakin University and RMIT will also talk about crop production and product processing.
