Strokes and heart disease are both serious health issues that collectively kill about 760,000 people a year in the United States alone. Preventative care can go a long way to reducing that number, but it can’t eliminate the threat completely. Doctors and researchers have looked at CBD oil in a number of different animal trials, and what they’ve found is very encouraging for those who may have a history of heart disease or blood disorders in the family. Find out more about how cannabis reacts with the body in some of the most extreme situations a body can face.
CBD Oil and Strokes
Strokes occur when either the blood is clotted and can’t reach the brain, or when a blood vessel abruptly ruptures. When a person has a stroke, the primary concern is stopping the brain damage as quickly as possible. Many people can live for decades after they’ve had a stroke, but if too much oxygen is lost, the quality of life leaves much to be desired. They may suffer a number of ailments, including memory loss and motor or verbal impairments. Scientists have tested a number of different methods to find out how to limit brain cell death when time is of the essence, and they may have found an answer in cannabis.
Research conducted into CBD oil suggests that the compound can potentially block glutamate, a chemical produced when oxygen can’t reach the brain. It’s the precursor to the molecules that end up killing off brain cells and stopping it could be the key to saving the brain from additional damage during a stroke. So far, the oil has been administered on rats using both THC and CBD. However, it should be noted that scientists preferred CBD because of its non-psychoactive nature. While Vitamins A and E are also known antioxidants, they may not be as effective at blocking glutamate as CBD is.
CBD Oil and Heart Attacks
The effect of CBD oil with heart attacks is similar to that of stroke in that it works to counteract cell death. Animals induced with CBD directly before a cardiac arrest had less inflammation and stress. It’s particularly helpful in protecting the left ventricle, which is the thickest quadrant of all four heart chambers and the one responsible for distributing oxygenated blood to the brain. In human studies, it’s been shown to lower the rate of vascular stress so the blood vessels can flow freely. It may even be able to shield the arteries from the damage of long-term sugar intake. Those with diabetes may face lower odds of a heart attack after using CBD oil as a solution for cardiomyopathy (which can ultimately lead to heart failure.)
Those familiar with CBD oil may be understandably skeptical about its effect on heart disease. It’s been reported and documented that CBD can increase the heart rate of the user after taking it (similar to caffeine.) This may make people think that their odds of a heart attack are actually higher if they use cannabis. However, CBD is a known blood pressure reducer. The increase in heart rate not only varies from person to person, it’s also extremely unlikely that it will cause any lasting damage to the heart or body. In fact, plenty of people who are at higher risk of heart attacks can still take cannabis even if their heart does race after taking it. The heart-racing effects of cannabis wear off over time, but the blood pressure benefits do not.
It’s clear that CBD has several benefits when it comes to warding off two of the biggest killers Americans face today, and researchers will continue to work on finding a way to incorporate it into prevention plans and first-response treatments. While heart and blood health is dependent on a number of factors (e.g., diet, exercise, stress, etc.) CBD can be an excellent way to counteract some of the most damaging diseases that can affect the human body.
