The first question people ask when the enter The Hemp Seed in Surina Business Park on Malcolm Street in Friday Harbor is: "Do you sell cannabis?" Proprietors Tiffany Goudey and Ike White let customers know the shop is 100 percent THC-free.
The shop is filled with a variety of products made from hemp. Items range from clothing, to oven mitts to body care products to paper goods. White says the couple is interested in promoting hemp production.
Hemp is an important commercial crop in Canada. In the U.S. it was first prohibited in the 1930s and again in the 1970s. HempUniversity.com has a list of hemp's status in other parts of the world.
Laws are changing in the U.S. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures website: At least 28 states have laws in place related to industrial hemp. Generally, states have taken three approaches: (1) establish commercial industrial hemp programs, (2) establish industrial hemp research programs or (3) authorize studies of industrial hemp or the industrial hemp industry. Some states establishing these programs require a change in federal laws or a waiver from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency prior to implementation.
Washington legislators passed bill ESSB 6206 in March 2016 and now the state Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is working to design a program to license researchers to grow industrial hemp and certify hemp seed. Read more about the progress on the WSDA website.
The Hemp Seed also has a Smoke Shop section which has jars, pipes and smoking accessories for sale. Also available are natural cleaning products to use to clean the smoking items.
