A group of hemp activists is calling on the Obama administration to remove the cannabis plant from a list of a federally banned drugs
In the absence of congressional action, the Hemp Industries Association petitioned the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Wednesday to deschedule hemp, which would allow states to decide how to regulate the substance.
The petition comes as the group celebrates with hemp-laced foods and snacks ahead of Hemp History Week.
Legislation to legalize hemp has stalled in Congress.
Currently, the DEA bans farmers from growing hemp, because it comes from cannabis plants — even though it does not have the same mind-altering effects as marijuana, advocates say.
“Hemp just can’t be used to get high,” said Eric Steenstra, executive director of the Hemp Industries Association.
