Wonder Bites
WINNIPEG — We all try to eat right. But sometimes it doesn’t work that way. The saving grace is to have a snack that’s ready-when-you-are, transportable and most importantly, delicious. Wonder Bites are the answer.
These portable morsels are packed with all kinds of good things including Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts. These shelled hemp seeds have a slightly nutty taste, similar to a sunflower seed or pine nut. They make a great addition to salad, cereal, yogurt or smoothies. And they fall into the superfood category thanks to 10 grams of plant-based protein and 10 grams of omegas in a 30-gram serving.
Wonder Bites also contain Adaigo Acres Naked Oats, a product we know and love. Check out this fabulous cookie recipe that features the oats.
Almost everyone has a version of these peanut butter-based, oaty, coconutty snacks. I first encountered them when Ben Kramer served as chef at Dandelion Eatery. They were sold at Organza Market under the name of Ben’s Wonder Balls. Common Sense Teahouse & Bakery offers an oversized option rich in peanut butter. The recipe below comes from local food blogger Claudia’s Cookbook, with a few of my own modifications. Feel free to experiment with your own version, adding nuts or dried fruit.
Wonder Bites
- 1 cup Adagio Acres Naked Oats
- 2/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/2 cup Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts
- 1/2 cup mini dark chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix all ingredients together. Form into bite-sized balls. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three weeks, but they won’t last that long.
