Now is the time for all good Mauians to urge a rapid switch from cane to hemp.
At the state level a bipartisan effort to legalize industrial hemp has started. UH is conducting a two-year study on the many uses of hemp besides cleaning up the highly degraded cane field soil.
A petition drive started to place a measure on the 2016 ballot that empowers farmers to work with the county to condemn former cane fields for growing food and hemp.
All these efforts must be supported by petitions, voting and neighbor to neighbor as we move Maui to a sustainable future that expands public ownership and diversifies our economy. Imua!
