Reader: We need to get serious about biodegradable bags

Biodegradable bags made of agricultural hemp can significantly reduce
plastic pollution.

It appears that California is leading the way on not allowing plastic bags to be used in grocery stores, etc.
For years, agricultural hemp has been tainted with marijuana association. What baloney. If you wanted to smoke hemp, compared to a “joint” of marijuana, you would have to have a “joint” as big as a telephone pole.
Hemp can be used to make biodegradable plastic bags. The plastic bags we now use are not biodegradable. The huge floating islands of debris in our oceans are mainly today’s plastic. If we used hemp to make plastic, there would be virtually none of these island dumps.
It is past time for our legislators and ourselves to recognize this simple truth.
