UK's Spindletop Research Farm will be harvesting their hemp crop on Tuesday as part of a pilot project.
UK is evaluating 13 different kinds of hemp fiber and seed. They hope to find which variety is best suited to Kentucky.
Researchers will look at potential problems including weeds, disease and insects.
Tuesday they start mowing the crop that is harvested much like hay.
Hemp was legally planted in the state this year at eight different locations.
There are five pilot projects in Kentucky. They have different areas of focus including medical research and hemp fiber production.
Additionally there is a Homegrown by Heroes Military Veteran Farmer Program that is studying the cultivation of Kentucky Heirloom hemp seed.
