New York State is launching a $3.2 initiative to support the state's industrial hemp industry
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is proposed an investment of $650,000 in a new $3.2 million industrial hemp processing plant near Binghamton, NY, according to Gov. Cuomo’s 2018 State of the State report.
The move would be the first component of a broader package put forth by Cuomo to bolster the New York’s position in the burgeoning U.S. hemp industry leader, including an investment to import “thousands of pounds” of industrial hemp seed to the state, the report said. New York will also invest $2 million to launch a seed certification and breeding program to develop local varieties of seeds and host a hemp research forum in February.
“Initiatives like continuing to invest in hemp is a game changer for the agricultural community here and we’re very excited about $650,000 going into the investments here, but also $3.2 million for a hemp processing plant and bringing in seeds and just doing some experiments right here on campus at Binghamton University,” New York State Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul told an audience at Binghamton University on Jan. 4 in a discussion of the governor’s plans, television news station WBNG reported.
The location of the planned facility has not yet been selected, but is slated to open some time in 2018, according to a report by television news station WIVT. When built, the site will process fiber and oils from hemp.
