The Health Benefits of Hemp Oil

A few years ago, hemp oil emerged as the newest healthy oil on the market, possessing all kinds of beneficial properties and a multitude of uses.

Hemp – A brief history

Hemp has been grown for centuries in countries like China, Chile and nations in Europe. The name hemp refers to tall varieties of the cannabis plant, which produces useable products including seeds, oil and strong, hardwearing fibers.
Historically, hemp has been used for a variety of purposes. The seeds are high in omega oils and proteins, making them a nutritional food source, while the fibers of the plants have long been made into cloth, paper and even fuel.
Hemp oil in particular is produced by pressing hempseed and releasing the oil, which is increasingly used in body and skincare products for its rich nourishment.

10 benefits of hemp oil

The benefits of hemp oil are wide-ranging and undisputed; the adaptable oil can be used in cooking, skincare, crafts and more. Packed with powerful proteins and minerals, hemp oil supports healthy living.

1. Hemp oil for eczema

Research into the effects of hemp oil for eczema have returned positive results showing that, when ingested, the oil can increase the amount of healthy fat in the blood, improving the skin and reducing symptoms of eczema. An alternative to taking hemp oil orally is to use creams or hemp oil soaps to treat eczema topically.

2. Actively anti-aging

When applied directly to the skin in a cream or hemp oil soap/body wash, the oil is reported to have an anti-aging effect. Improving the skin’s top layer by pumping it with healthy fats, hemp oil has regenerative properties that can contribute to a more youthful, plumped-up complexion.

3. Deeply moisturizing

An all-natural moisturizer, hemp oil nourishes the skin, locking in moisture while allowing the skin to breathe. The fats in hemp seed oil are very similar to the human body’s natural lipids, penetrating deep into the skin and improving water resistance without clogging pores.

4. Healthy for hair

The fatty acids in hemp oil are great for improving hair’s shine and texture, giving it a natural gloss and providing extra strength. It can also be used to reduce the oiliness of oil-based shampoos and improve scalp health by penetrating the skin with its moisturizing fats.

5. Body-boosting

Hemp oil has a variety of applications for bodily health, helping protect the heart and aid cognitive function with its naturally-occurring Omega 3 oils. Also containing Omega 6, hemp seed oil boosts the immune system and helps the body recover from fatigue following exercise.

6. Natural nail nourisher

Skin, hair and nails are all formed from the same type of dermal cells, and hemp oil affords benefits in each area. Nourishing for dehydrated, brittle nails, hemp oil can be massaged directly into the nail bed or is sometimes added to nail polish to give users stronger, healthier nails.

7. Disease defense

The sterols – or alcohols – contained in hemp oil have a number of preventative health benefits, including the ability to lower cholesterol, thus having the potential to keep heart attacks at bay. Hemp seed oil’s antioxidant properties can also be beneficial in warding off degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and atherosclerosis.

8. Vitamin vitality

Hemp oil is packed with minerals like potassium and calcium, also containing high levels of essential vitamins such as Vitamin A, C and E. These vitamins are vital for maintaining good eyesight and skin, a healthy immune system and for supporting organs and protecting bodily tissue.

9. Stomach soothing

Protein found in hemp oil is valuable for human health in a number of ways – one particular benefit is soothing the stomach and aiding digestion. The majority of protein in hemp seeds is Edestin, while Albumin is also found; these proteins can help relieve stomach-ache and gas.

10. Anti-inflammatory

Hemp oil is also used in applications for arthritis and other inflammation-based diseases. The nutrients in the oil can reduce swelling and improve blood circulation for positive treatment of symptoms. Maximum Moisture Cold Process Soap Recipe

This is a recipe for 1 lb of deeply nourishing soap, combining some of the main ingredients in Soap.club’s all-natural products: hemp seed oil, olive oil and coconut oil.

Ingredients

  • 5 oz hemp oil
  • 5.2 oz olive oil
  • 5 oz coconut oil
  • 6 oz distilled water
  • 2.3 oz lye
  • 0.7 oz fragrance/essential oil (optional)

Equipment

  • Rubber gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Large stainless steel or enamel pot
  • Wooden or plastic soap mold
  • Weighing scales
  • Hand stick blender
  • Two 3 qt size plastic pitchers
  • Two thermometers
  • Two wooden spoons
  • Measuring cup, 2 or 3-cup size
  • Freezer paper
  • An old blanket or large rag
  • Piece of cardboard cut to fit the mold as a lid

Method

1. Wearing your goggles and gloves, weigh out the lye into one of the two pitchers and the distilled water into the other. Slowly add the lye to the water pitcher and stir until dissolved. Set the mixture on one side for a few hours while it heats up.
2. In the meantime, line your soap mold with freezer paper and weigh out the hemp oil, olive oil and coconut oil into an enamel or stainless steel pot and heat until the oils reach a temperature of between 100 and 110 degrees F.
3. When both the oils and the lye mixture have reached roughly the same temperature, add the lye solution to the oils and stir continuously.
4. Next, add any essential oils or fragrance to the mixture and continue to stir, or switch to a stick blender to speed up the tracing process.
5. When you see the mixture trace – or leave tracks – it’s time to pour the soap batter into your mold, cover with the cardboard lid and blanket, and leave to stand for about 18 hours.
6. Remove the soaps from the mold and let them air on an open drying rack – you can leave them in loaves or cut into bars at this point.
For the best quality soap, let the bars/loaves stand for between four and six weeks before use.
