HempFlax, a Dutch company active in the processing of hemp, invested EUR 5 million in the hemp business in Romania, opening its first factory in Alba county, company representatives announced.
Before 1989, Romania was the fourth largest exporter of hemp globally, but the volume fell dramatically to only a few hectares in 2000. The investment made by HempFlax from private capital shows a return of interest for this market.
The company buys raw material for processing from Romanian farmers in bales.
“Through innovation and vigour, HempFlax contributes to the concept of agrification in Romania. Providing renewable resources, synthetic fibers made from fossil resources – such as nylon, fiberglass and plastics – can be replaced by fibers from these natural resources such as hemp,”said Oana Suciu, HempFlax general director.
HempFlax cultivated area in 2015 is approximately 500 hectares located in Sebes, Pianu and Petresti and investors expect it to increase by approximately 300 hectares year by year. The processing capacity of the plant is four tons of stalks per hour, which means a target of 5,000 hectares so as to reach its maximum capacity.
HempFlax, a Dutch company active since 1994, designs, develops and patents specialized equipment for the cultivation of hemp, especially in the harvest, offering equipment which manages to combine three distinct operations of harvesting the hemp seeds, stems and leaves at the same time.
