NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has launched an informational web page for farmers interested in growing industrial hemp.
The page has information about hemp's legal status, and also features aimed at helping to develop state regulations and licensing processes to allow Tennessee farmers to grow hemp.
This year, the state legislature passed a law that would allow it. Hemp can be used for everything from seeds to put on a salad to insulating your attic.
But hemp has also long been associated with its much more potent cousin: cannibis or marijuana.
Supporters convinced state lawmakers that the THC level of Hemp is much lower -- and safer-- and the crop SHOULD be grown in Tennessee.
"There's enough research to show you can actually make a crop that is going to abide by those standards,” said hemp supporter Clint Palmer.
The state hopes to have a workable draft of rules and regulations for industrial hemp in the next few weeks.
