Three feet high cannabis plants have been growing in public on the South Bank for months, campaigners claim.

The Feed the Birds Campaign have been planting hemp seeds in very public places around London and the UK in order to “create a conversation” about cannabis, according to a spokesperson.

Finn Hemingway, from the campaign, said that seeds had been planted near Westminster and Big Ben and all along the Southbank to Tower Bridge.

One set of plants, he said, near Tower Bridge, grew to three feet and were walked past by thousands of commuters every day for three months before they were ripped down.

Hemingway said that hemp has been grown in Britain for thousands of years.

“The Romans named the Oxfordshire town of Hempton after the plant and Queen Elizabeth I used to fine farmers who didn’t grow hemp.”

With summer’s growing season approaching, the group are predicting that the public plants will proliferate.
