The flag that will be flapping over the Capitol building in D.C. for Independence Day will be constructed of hemp materials.
Colorado hemp advocate Michael Bowman is the man chiefly responsible for the flying of the hempen Old Glory, which is made from Colorado-raised hemp and screen-printed with the stars and stripes.
The idea came to Michael while in the process of lobbying Congress earlier this year to include pro-hemp measures in the farm bill. Well, his farm bill efforts weren’t successful, but he was victorious in his labors to have a hemp-fabric flag fly over the Capitol building.
Representative Jared Polis gave Michael a hand at ironing out the necessary details, which involved working with the Capitol’s flag office.

The fields our nation’s forefathers grew with pride and didn’t have to hide, hemp.
Michael wanted the flag to be flown on Independence Day as a representation of the important role that hemp has played in our country’s history. Michael notes the fact that Betsy Ross’s flag was made of hemp and Colonial settlers even paid their taxes in the crop.
After the flag’s holiday flight over the Capitol, it will make its way back to Colorado where it will be flown over the state capitol building in Denver. Then the flag will begin a nationwide tour of state houses where it will be transported to states where there’s legislation pending that would legalize hemp. The first stop on the tour will be Vermont.
Have a hashy, hempy 4th of July from all of us here @ The 420 Times! Be safe and have globs of fun!
