Mitch McConnell Reiterates He Will Not Endorse Legalizing Marijuana

In March, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced a bill to legalize hemp farming that caused many people to speculate that the Republican leader may be evolving on the issue of marijuana. But McConnell has thrown cold water on that idea.
McConnell told a group of reporters yesterday that he has no plans to legalize marijuana and does not support the cause. He also noted that hemp and cannabis, while related, are still two different plants.
“I do not have any plans to endorse the legalization of marijuana,” McConnell said. “It is a different plant. It has an illicit cousin which I choose not to embrace."
McConnell is very right on that point. While the two plants are related, hemp contains almost no traces of THC, the compound in cannabis that produces the psychoactive effects. Hemp was a major agricultural product in the United States in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries until Congress decided to ban the farming of it last century. But hemp can be grown to make all sorts of different products, none of which are related to getting high.
So if you were one of the people who thought McConnell might finally become a reasonable human being, we're sorry to say that's still not the case.
