Sicilian start-up partners with University of Catania

(ANSAmed) - PALERMO, AUGUST 11 - A group of young Sicilians from start-up company Kanesis created a hemp-based bioplastic that they presented at Expo on Tuesday.

The project, in collaboration with the University of Catania, is still in the experimental phase and the tentative name of the product is "hempbioplastic".

Kanesis founder Giovanni Milazzo said the company was founded on ideas brought forth by Henry Ford in the 1930s around the recovery of industrial waste products, in their case with vegetable-based products.

"We started with hemp and then combined it with other products. We made a protoype for 3D printing with 30% better tensile strength, 20% lighter than classic bioplastic, with a notably commercial cost," Milazzo said.

Kanesis is also taking part in a museum project in Catania called Museo Reba, a "cultural incubator" aimed at social and cultural development in the San Berillo neighborhood, said museum artistic director Renato Basile.

"(We're) in perfect synergy with Kanezis in the use and reuse of hemp," Basile said.
