The secret to a good night's sleep: Fresh wool and hemp...yours for just £4K in Horley

WANT a good night's sleep? How about a £4,000 mattress stuffed with a form of cannabis plant.
Tucked away in the Yorkshire Dales, a flock of 1,000 sheep are calmly grazing a field while nearby, acres of hemp standing 12 feet high are guarded by police to avert any unsavoury harvesting of the crop.

But this is not the start of a Jane Austen novel, it is the birthplace of a Harrison Spinks mattress and bed set, available at Horley's iconic Collingwood Batchellor store for just a few thousand pounds.
Staff at the family-run department store, which carried out a £300,000 revamp last year to become a specialist homeware shop, say the hand-made mattresses have become popular at the store.

The contents of a Harrison Spinks mattress – hemp, wool and unique springs designed by the firm – are all grown and made on-site at the company's factory in Yorkshire, where the mattresses are put together and hand-stitched.

Last week, two Collingwood Batchellor staff made the trip north to visit the site and see the process in action – no man-made materials are included in the product and the wood from the hemp is given to nearby farmers as bedding for horses.

Guy Collingwood, who runs the department store, in Victoria Road, Horley, with his brother Tom, hailed the unique nature of Harrison Spinks.

He told the Mirror: "They are British, they are hand-made and all the stuffing and fillings are grown by them. It's fantastic.

"They grow the hemp and, for the wool, they have sheep on the farm.

"There is a lot to talk about with them, when customers ask about the product, and they have been selling really well."

The staff from the Collingwood Batchellor furniture department who visited the farm admitted they were surprised to find police guarding the hemp, but they are there to ward off visits from people hoping to put the hemp to an illegal recreational use.

Helen Weaver, marketing manager for Harrison Spinks, added: "Our products are unique in that we don't use any man-made fibres.

"We are a traditional Yorkshire company. If we can find a way to make something ourselves and make our product unique, then we will."
