THE state government today announced easing regulations for Tasmania's industrial hemp industry.
The state's peak industrial hemp body says growers currently have to deal with five departments, but they are hopeful all regulations can fall under the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) from now on.
"We also support the use of industrial hemp products in food as it would open up new markets for the industry and will continue to lobby strongly for federal approval," Minister for Primary Industries and Water Jeremy Rockliff said.
Currently, mainland companies are importing hemp products from overseas but Tasmanians are having trouble supplying hemp, despite containing mostly negligible amounts of cannabis' active compound, THC.
