Whether you have lactose intolerance, an allergy to cow’s milk or are just going for a different taste, there are more alternatives for milk than ever. In this ongoing series, we’ll examine some of the more common options to give you the information to decide what’s best for you.

WHAT IS IT: Hemp milk is made by soaking and grinding hemp seeds in water. The resulting “milk” is sweetened or flavored. The hemp seeds are the edible part of the same plant that is used to make marijuana, but the seeds do not contain marijuana’s psychoactive component. Popular brands include Pacific Natural Foods and Living Harvest Tempt.
NUTRITION: Nutrition information varies by brand. A 1-cup serving of Pacific’s Original Hemp Milk contains 140 calories, 5 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, 3 grams of protein and 14 grams of sugar.
GOOD TO KNOW: Hemp milk is a source of vitamins B12, D and riboflavin. It’s high in calcium and essential amino acids. Hemp milk is vegan friendly and dairy free.
TAKE NOTE: Hemp milk contains less protein than a serving of regular cow’s milk and slightly more sugar. (Cow’s milk has 7.86 grams of protein.)
HOW TO USE: The nutty flavor of hemp milk is similar to that of sunflower seeds. You can also find hemp milk in vanilla and chocolate flavors. It’s a bit thicker than soy milk or rice milk. Drink it by the glass, add it to your coffee and try it wherever you would use regular dairy milk.
