Why swap whey for organic hemp protein? I am constantly being asked the question about protein powder. And the questions go on: Do we need hemp? Why? What’s the best type of hemp protein to buy?
So lets take this opportunity to answer them for you…
I follow a predominantly plant-based diet so my preference is hemp seeds (I tend to buy the seed not the powder), hemp works better for me, and I prefer the nutty, light flavor it has.
Why we do need protein to function?
Protein is a building block of cells and tissues that are needed to keep us strong. It is made up of 20 amino acids, 9 of which are essential amino acids. We need protein to: Build and repair muscles, tissues and organs. As collagen, it holds cells together and forms the framework for bones and teeth
Proteins are also enzymes which are needed for digestion and other functions:
Regulate hormones
Regulate fluid and PH balance
To move nutrients around the body

Protein powders are synonymous with fitness and muscle building which is why the markets are saturated with different types and brands – some good and a lot of them not so great.
We can get protein from different sources, plant, animal or dairy but the most common sources found in protein powder brands are usually whey or plant based.
Whey protein is a good source if you’re looking too build muscles, lose weight and improve overall health. Whey protein is formed as a by-product of cheese making which is separated from the casein in milk. Possible benefits of whey protein include aiding weight loss, lowering cholesterol and lowering blood pressure.
However there are some possible side effects with whey protein especially for those who are intolerant to dairy products, which include:
Stomach pains
Cramps
Reduced appetite
Nausea
Headache
Fatigue.

So what about Hemp Protein?
Hemp protein on the other hand is definitely my preferred source of protein. Why? Because they are one of nature’s best sources of protein.
If you’re looking to increase your protein intake from a natural and vegan source, then hemp protein powder just might be the perfect choice for you. Here’s the thing, hemp protein contains 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids that your body is unable to produce on its own and must obtain from dietary sources. It is also more loaded withhealthy omega fatty acids and fiber than many other types of protein powder.
Hemp protein powder is made from hemp seeds, which provide a solid nutritional boost. Hemp protein powder packs a healthy punch of dietary fiber, chlorophyll, minerals and antioxidants without any saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium or sugar.
It is safe and legal!
Hemp is a distinct variety of the Cannabis sativa plant, which can be grown to maximize the fibers in the stalk of the plant or seed production. Hemp has little to no measurable levels of the active compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid most known for its psychoactive properties.
The compound has been researched extensively, and research has shown that when it’s not smoked, it has substantial health benefits with no side effects. So don’t worry yourself about eating hemp protein, as it certainly will not get you high and if it does it will only be in natural, positive and legal ways!
Choosing hemp protein, as I’ve said previously, is one of the best decisions anyone can make to boost energy and improve overall health.
Here are some other benefits to using hemp protein:
Boosts overall protein levels, which is important for the body. It boosts metabolism and increases fat burning potential.
- Hemp seeds reduce the risk of osteoporosis as they are naturally high in omega-6 fatty acid (GLA). Some studies suggest that people who don’t get enough essential fatty acids are more likely to have bone loss than those with normal levels of these fatty acids, especially GLA and EPA.
- One of the properties hemp seeds possess is an ideal balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, which promotes good cardiovascular health.
- Another property hemp protein is rich in is soluble and insoluble fiber. Both forms of fiber naturally cleanse the colon, reducing constipation and toxins in the body.
- The high nutrient content of hemp protein powder makes it a perfect ally in reducing cravings for processed sweets which helps a great deal if you possess a sweet tooth like I do!
- Hemp seed food products offer a healthy dose of dietary fiber, which helps regulate blood glucose. When you keep your glucose levels steady, you’re much less likely to experienceenergy crashes and aren’t as likely to crave sugar to fill the void.
- Consuming hemp seeds, especially through the winter season, will help boost your immune system greatly. Hemp seeds contain the globular plant proteins edestin and albumin, which are responsible for enzymatic functions in the blood plasma making them critical for strong immune function.
With all that said and done, there’s more – hemp protein is also mostly grown in certified organic form so with organic hemp protein you get the best product with seriously huge health benefits, just another reason why it’s my preferred source of protein.
If you don’t do well with dairy products, are lactose intolerant or just want a vegan source of protein, then I would swap to using hemp protein.
Peace & fabulous health!
