Kings County supervisors will consider supporting a bill Tuesday that would authorize a pilot project that would allow hemp to be grown in Kings and four other counties for the next eight years.
SB676, The California Industrial Hemp Farming Act, is sponsored by state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco. The board is considering a letter of support after it was unanimously approved by the county’s Agricultural Advisory Committee.
Farmers would be permitted to sell hemp seed, oil and fiber to manufacturers. The bill clarifies that hemp, while being a form of the Cannabis plant, has no psychoactive drug qualities, unlike marijuana.
In other action, the board will consider final adoption of its supervisorial redistricting plan. The board chose a map last week from several alternatives that had been reviewed in public hearings throughout the county. The selected map is similar to existing political boundaries.
A group that had asked for consideration of a rival plan may appear again Tuesday.
The board will also be asked to approve a first-time homebuyer program and hold a study session to review and update county fees.
The board meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Kings County Government Center, 1400 W. Lacey Blvd. in Hanford.
