Designers Debut World's 1st 'Green Bikinis'
July 19, 2011 12:35 PM EDT
Meet the first "green bikinis" - compostable garments made of hemp, bamboo or recycled plastic bottles.
During Swim Week in Miami, a group of "eco-couture" designers unveiled swimsuit lines fashioned from various "sustainable" materials, instead of synthetic textiles such as polyester.
In fact, Linda Loudermilk bragged about creating the world's first fully compostable bathing suit, complete with bra cups made of plant oil, according to the Miami Herald.
The apparel, she claimed, would biodegrade within 180 days buried under dirt, leaving no traces behind. Are the landfills currently overflowing with discarded bikinis?
In addition to Loudermilk, the show also featured green bikini lines from Aqua Green, Meadow and MAE Couture.
Green bikinis are great for the companies producing them. If they are less durable than conventional swimsuits, women would constantly have to buy new ones.
Nevertheless, using biodegradable elements poses several challenges. Spandex, for instance, is important to women because it makes the suit cling and highlight their bodies in all the right places.
Don't women stress enough about how they look in swimwear? Pretty soon, we'll be back to wearing fig leafs on the beach.
"This is the new meaning of luxury," said Loudermilk. "How many Gucci glasses and Louis Vuitton products can you have?"
