Bio-burner heated in time for winter cold

MURRAY, KY -With the extreme cold, the heat is on a lot of our minds. You try and save as much as you can with your heating bill, but what about the more unconventional methods?

You may remember Murray State University harvested their hemp crop about a month ago. Well now, the students and staff are working hard to prepare that hemp to produce additional heat.
The new bio burner is working hard to provide the heat they desperately need in this extreme cold. 


With the winter cold and snow, it's time for many of us to bundle up. Marisa Bedron, a graduate assistant at Murray State University said if anyone was working in the Equine Arena, they would wear gloves, leggings, jeans, bibs, coveralls, hats, earmuffs all to try and stay warm during classes.
But it's a lifestyle Bedron and her students no longer have to endure. She says now people only have to wear light jackets, gloves, and maybe a hat.

Bedron helps maintain the bio-burner which burns material already abundantly found on the farm. Right now, it's burning wood, but will soon be burning hemp, "We're still working with it it's definitely new technology and we re figuring it out."



Dr. Tony Brannon, Dean of the School of Agriculture hopes this helps the bottom line of the heating bill, "We're going to be able to recycle some of our products that may not produce a lot of income but we may lower our expenses."

The arena is heated by radiant heat: the panels heat the entire arena because the bio burner works with a boiler system.

Brannon says if the hemp is successful, the experiment could help a wider array of people, "We hope someday it'll be transferable to homes into other agricultural entities."

But for now everyone is enjoying the heat. Bedron says, "It's nice to be able to feel our body and be able to ride normally."

Right now the campus is preparing the hemp to burn. They say when its ready to burn, they anticipate it will burn hotter and more efficiently than other materials.

Legalising hemp growing simply helps fight poverty

Johannesburg - Anyone serious about alleviating poverty in South Africa with a desire to create a massive black-dominated industry here, might consider hemp, the non-drug kind that has been grown by humans for at least 10 000 years. The plant not only has extraordinary attributes, there is a growing market for it.
We already have a flourishing illegal agricultural industry growing hemp’s relative, dagga. Our dagga farmers are enterprising. They know how, where and when to plant it. They do this cheaply without expensive input. They know how to get their product to market.
Their distribution channels are in place. And they have a shrewd knowledge of the link between supply and demand, and their influence on the market price.
If our dagga farmers who generally apply their skills in poverty-stricken rural areas had a ready market for hemp, countless hours of police action would be unnecessary.
Sold on the world market, industrial quality hemp could be a rich source of foreign exchange, employing thousands of people who would otherwise clog up our jails and our judicial system.
In jail, dagga growers become hardened criminals. Far better to make them honest citizens, subject to taxation like the rest of us. Canada, for example had about 35 000 hectares under hemp last year, and our climate is more ideal.
When sailing ships needed rope that did not rot in sea air, the US Navy got a regular supply of hemp through a law making it compulsory for farmers to grow it. The US government even dictated how much land had to be allocated. No US farmers lay comatose in their fields.
In fact, if they grew their quota they could use it like cash. It was legal tender. They grew it happily. They were fined if they did not.
So hemp was used for rigging, for pendants, pennants, sails and oakum. Even Bibles were printed on hemp paper for sailors to take to sea. Then along came steel ships driven by steam and the hemp market dried up almost completely.
Hemp’s potent cousin was only banned in the early 20th century, South Africa being the first to do so under pressure from the mining industry. The allegation was that black miners preferred to “chill” after, and even before, the hard day’s work underground.
The South African ban, racially based as it undoubtedly was, paled before the racism that drove the ban in the US, which followed in 1937. Appalling and risible arguments were made against all hemp, regardless of the type. It was claimed to be responsible for “satanic” music, for making white women sleep with “negroes”. To cap this absurdity, it was claimed that it “makes darkies (sic) think they’re as good as white men” and that it led to “communist brainwashing”.
The result of the ban is that today the US imports hundreds of millions of dollars worth of hemp every year. A tiny amount of locally produced hemp is permitted under licence. And, as it is here, where there is a flourishing underground production of marijuana.
Hysterical and outrageous scare mongering inevitably attached to industrial hemp and this misinformation is today regarded as common knowledge.
Industrial hemp has thousands of uses. In Canada, there are dozens of research laboratories looking into hemp’s many attributes. The German car industry uses products made from it. Your BMW may even have a dashboard made from it – is it better than plastic, biodegradable and can be recycled.
In South Africa which imports R1 million of hemp every year, we also have some research going on in the Eastern and Western Cape, and under licence some hemp is grown locally, but nowhere near enough to meet industrial demand. And growing it has yet to take off in the Eastern Cape, where poverty is most acute.
The international market for hemp is growing at 23 percent a year according to some sources,
Some say hemp could replace cotton, which needs fertiliser. Hemp uses very little or none and is much less damaging to the soil. It grows faster and yields a crop every three months. What is more, hemp grows where other plants will not.
Hemp beats wood for making pulp. It also has longer, stronger fibres when woven. It makes such hardwearing cloth that in the past, people bequeathed their hemp shirts to grandchildren.
Henry Ford, for all his mad politics, made fuel for his cars, methanol, charcoal tar, pitch, ethyl acetate, and creosote – all from hemp. In World War II, the ban on growing hemp was lifted and a million acres was planted. That all ended after the war, but hemp growing continued to be legal until the 1960s when the ban was re-imposed.
Why continue to import tons every year when we know how to grow it, where to grow it, and have done for centuries?
What stops us is a mixture of reasons. Bureaucracy is one. Our Department of Agriculture sees hemp as a potentially valuable commercial crop. Our Department of Health seems not to know that hemp is different from dagga.
Nor does it know that if you grow the two together, hemp seriously reduces the quality of its drug-producing cousin, making it innocuous.
The result is inertia and a lost opportunity for our poor rural inhabitants still living within the old Bantustan boundaries and growing dagga for sale at the risk of imprisonment.
Hemp production is not the same as making drugs available to all and sundry. It is about jumping on an old bus fitted with a powerful new engine that is pulling away from the curb.
We are, as the Americans would say, “nuts” not to leap aboard. It will not be easy. There will always be a ready market for dagga, and for a while, the illegal trade in it will continue and grow, but if commercial farmers show that cash can be made by growing hemp, it is not inconceivable that dagga growers will follow.
A more powerful motive is that growing hemp could raise the standard of living of people living in poverty in our rural areas.
In any case, if France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Romania can grow hemp legally, why can’t we without having to get a permit?
A start would be to change the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, the Medicines and Related Substances Act, and the Environmental Conservation Act. The latter declares all hemp an invasive weed and none of our legislation differentiates between dagga and industrial hemp.
The political will is all we need to remove the legislative barriers to growing hemp for commercial purposes. The economic, tax-gathering and job-creation benefits of legalising hemp growing will follow.

Legislative Committee Briefed on Hemp Research Plans

The State Agriculture Committee heard an update last week on Kentucky's hemp pilot project. In September, researchers at the University of Kentucky harvested the first legal crop in decades. UK Plant Sciences Professor David Williams says there's growing interest in a variety of hemp supported products.  "They're particularly interested in the vast of the long strong fibers for composite materials like car door panels, pseudo plastics, particle board type products, building construction materials," said Williams.
Some members of law enforcement have previously expressed concerns about trying to crack down on marijuana in the midst of hemp production.  Committee Chair Paul Hornback and University of Kentucky Researcher David Williams say plots are easily identifiable.  "It really makes it pretty easy for state police because they have the coordinates,  If there is a plot growing that is not under those coordinates, then, it's illegal," said Hornback.
"The entire Canadian industry operates under that exact same protocol," added Williams.
Williams told committee members researchers are holding on to the hemp harvested from the test plots.  He says a larger amount will be planted in 2015, but far short of the amount needed to meet commercial interests.  The state Department of Agriculture is also permitting hemp sites for individual farmers next year. ​


Hemp could pay for Wyoming

Industrial hemp, marijuana’s non-intoxicating cousin, provides for anything from clothing to cooking oil. Inasmuch as the 2014 federal farm bill allows pilot growing programs, hemp could soon be cultivated across the states, clearing the way for U.S. farmers to compete in an industry currently dominated by China. Already 41 states as well as Puerto Rico have introduced pro-hemp language; of these, 25 have passed pro-hemp statutes, while the following have removed all barriers to hemp production: California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia. The most recent election added Washington, D.C., and Alaska to the list.
If and when Wyoming actively pursues industrial hemp, state agencies and growers may find themselves doing business with companies like these:
Hemp Traders flourishes in Los Angeles. Founded 23 years ago by Lawrence Serbin, the company offers anything from raw hemp to textiles fashioned from hemp. In conversation Mr. Serbin disclosed that, currently, his company’s hemp is grown in China.
“These past twenty years I’ve traveled to China at least once a year,” he said.
I asked if he envisioned purchasing U.S.-produced hemp fiber. He’d love to, he said, but the lack of infrastructure makes it cumbersome to process and ship the fiber domestically. On the other hand, securing it from abroad presents its own challenges. “At the moment hemp fiber is in short supply in China,” he said. “If you had large quantities of good-quality stuff, they’d buy it off you.”
He finds the Chinese way of harvesting the fiber manually superior to the processing machines he saw in Europe. A follow-up email elaborated:
“I have been to China during the harvest season and participated in harvesting the hemp. . . . If farmers in the U.S, were able to grow hemp, then I would probably see about buying some of my products from them. Or even shipping the hemp back to China to be made into textiles.”
Another U.S. company, Hemp Basics, has been selling hemp products in Warren, New Jersey, since 1991. I spoke with the company’s founder/owner, who identified himself as Steve. He said he imports raw hemp from Rumania. His website, I found, is a wellspring of information, not only on hemp products but also on the growing, maintaining, harvesting, and storing of hemp seed and hemp fiber. The following information is drawn from that website:
Hemp may require up to three years to acclimatize to a new locale. Experimental plots should be produced to develop a localized strain before committing to large-scale cultivation. The best variety should be selected with careful consideration for the differences in yields of seed and stalk, maturation (early or late), and fiber content. Errors can result in a shortfall of 30 percent or more.
On the site, David Marcus’s 1997 “Commercial Hemp: An Economic Justification” compares hemp to three other crops: canola, grain corn, and spring wheat. By comparison, hemp is by far the most profitable crop of choice:
“I estimate that growing for seed and fiber will generate long term combined revenues of $244-$430/acre. The total expected costs of growing hemp for seed are $237/acre; even in a ‘worst case’ scenario. . . [yield is] better than the expected return from spring wheat.”
Hemp’s returns are more than double that of the next best crop, Ontario canola, while the highest estimates (which Marcus considers conservative) “are really quite exceptional compared to the other crops.” The study goes on to an in-depth analysis of hemp oil, its cultivation cost and revenue-producing potential.

Its parent company capitalizes on the cannabis market globally and focuses on the identification, acquisition, development, and commercialization of products like industrial hemp.
Natural Emphasis is a Canadian company promoting hemp for economic development that’s environmentally sustainable: “We have been actively involved in researching hemp, disseminating information, and challenging common misconceptions about hemp since 1994,” states its website. Past projects have focused on public education, market surveys, hemp feasibility studies, and articles on the economics and agronomics of commercial hemp production. Clients and partners range from the Ontario Hemp Alliance to Aboriginal Business Canada to independent Canadian farmers and entrepreneurs.
In 1998 only 44 registered varieties of hemp existed, with a gene pool acclimatized to Europe, Canada and the northern states of the U.S. The limited base could make hemp crops vulnerable; still, our state will likely follow Colorado’s example and obtain start-up seed from Canada. Wyoming farmers from Lusk to Wheatland are hoping it’ll happen soon.


Hemp Oil Is Curing Cancer

Since the beginning of time, plants like hemp have populated the earth, rich in nutrients that are essential to all life that consumes them. As mankind had evolved, it had become more familiar with the various plant species that surrounded them, cultivating new ways to consume these essential forms of life. During human evolution, it was discovered that oils could be extracted from plants with the nourishment from the plants compounded within the oils. Hemp oil is among the top oils used for health purposes today and has even been proven to cure cancer.
Some popular forms of these oils are extracted from such foods as olives, grape seeds, canola, corn and various types of nuts to name a few. Each oil offers its own benefits in the form of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty and amino acids. Some oils are healthier than others and contain more important substances to the body that may benefit overall health. Although coconut oil has become the new craze in terms of popularity and diversity of use, hemp oil is quickly gaining in popularity.
Hemp is loaded with extremely potent nutrients that are essential to human life. This oil has been used for thousands of years, by many different ancient civilizations, for health purposes among other things. The term hemp actually refers to the industrial use of the stalk and seed from the plant known by its botanical name Cannabis Sativa L.
Despite being known for its most popular subsidiary, marijuana, which also comes from the same plant and is typically used for medicinal purposes involving the smoking of the cannabis flowers, hemp is actually an extremely useful plant. Hemp is sustainable enough to be used for the creation of such things as food, clothing, body care products, paper and even architectural structures like houses and buildings. Hemp can also be used to replace all existing sources of fuel since it is cost-effective to produce and hemp Ethanol burns cleaner than every current source of fuel being used today.
In a documentary released in 2008 entitled Run From The Cure: The Rick Simpson Story, Simpson revealed how he used hemp oil to treat and cure his skin cancer. Along with curing himself, he used this medical miracle to create his own form of hemp oil and cure other cancer victims in his community.
In an article by Underground Health, they stated that researchers have discovered that the compound called cannabidiol has the ability to “turn off” the gene responsible for metastasis in an aggressive from of breast cancer. In another case, a biochemist named Dennis Hill used hemp oil to treat and cure his stage four prostate cancer. Hill discovered Rick Simpson’s Oil and used it to cure his cancer in only six months.
Dr. William Courtney reveals brain scans in the video below, of an actual brain tumor decreasing in size until disappearing entirely due to the use of hemp oil. The brain scans are of an infant child and show progressive shrinking in the tumor and complete disappearance in only eight months. The treatment was administered by the parents in which they applied hemp oil to the child’s pacifier only two times per day. Hemp oil may be the cure-all medicine that every doctor in the medical industry could use to cure all types of cancer and possibly extend the average age of human life.

Arkansas Attorney General Approves Marijuana Legalization Initiative

LITTLE ROCK, AR — A marijuana and hemp legalization constitutional amendment initiative sponsored by Arkansas CALM (Citizens’ Alliance for the Legalization of Marijuana) has won ballot title approval by Attorney General Dustin McDaniel.
The Secretary of State’s office must still approve the Arkansas Hemp & Marijuana Amendment’s petition wording instructions.
The amendment would legalize the cultivation, production, distribution, sale, purchase, possession and use of the cannabis plant, prohibiting sale to anyone under the age of 21.  It would let people to grow up to 36 plants.
If approved by the Secretary of State’s office, advocates will be able to begin collecting the 85,000 signatures needed to place the proposal on the 2016 ballot.


Colorado’s budding hemp industry hits regulatory bumps

After a rocky pilot year for legalized hemp in Colorado, the Department of Agriculture has taken on a program overhaul aimed at transforming marijuana’s non-intoxicating relative into a legitimate, commercial industry.
At the state’s Hemp Committee meeting this week, Division of Plant Industry authorities left a majority of the current rulebook marked in red and slated for tighter, clearer guidelines in 2015.
Although many of the revisions will seek to eliminate illicit activity and avoid conflict with the federal government, the state will also seek to get a better handle on its own management of this budding industry.
Lack of reporting requirements means Colorado has no available statistics on how much hemp was planted or harvested in the state this year. Growers were obligated to register their operations with the state ag department, but they were not asked to provide details on total acreage harvested.
If revisions submitted Dec. 1 are implemented, growers will need to report actual acreage planted, as well as varietal details beginning in March.
The state will also restrict research and development operations, with the goal of limiting such licensing to institutions of higher education, such as Colorado State University.
The ease of registering as an R&D operation this year provoked private businesses to file as researchers rather than commercial growers, explained Duane Sinning, assistant director of the state’s Division of Plant Industry.
“What we realized is that because it was written as loosely as it was, people called it development and for half the price got registration,” Sinning said.
R&D licensing cost $100 this year, in comparison to $200 for a commercial operation. As a result, the state ag department found many registered as researchers solely. Both R&D and commercial registration would now cost $500.
The state will also seek to clearly separate hemp growers from marijuana growers. The department encountered registered hemp operations attempting to breed in-house by crossing the plants with marijuana, Sinning said.
New guidelines would prevent industrial hemp operations from growing marijuana within 1 mile of an outdoor registered area or within one-fourth of a mile of indoor operations.
Although marijuana growers may bemoan the restriction, the idea is to protect hemp from producers attempting to manipulate the program, said Colorado Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture Ron Carleton.
“I did get some calls this summer, ‘Man, your hemp people are going to ruin our marijuana,’ and then we pointed out that their marijuana could ruin some people’s hemp,” Carleton said.
With both hemp and marijuana production illegal nationally, he said the new guidelines aim to avoid unnecessary conflict. Colorado’s effort to appease federal authorities has not been an enviable task.
“Guinea pig would be the right word. We’ve been bludgeoned and beat up,” Sinning said.
While states such as Kentucky have taken an aggressive approach, suing the federal government regarding hemp regulations, Colorado filed for a Schedule 1 drug import permit before purchasing hemp seeds.
Waiting on clear directions from federal authorities has meant both confusion and delays for institutions hoping to dive into the new industry.
At CSU, following the rules meant forgoing a season of varietal research. The university now has verbal approval from the Drug Enforcement Agency to proceed with testing.
“We have sent letters to DEA to get written confirmation of parameters but we have made the decision that verbal approval is sufficient for our needs,” said Mark Wdowik, CSU’s vice president of research.
Although he said the university feels confident it can rely on DEA’s word, commercial growers do not yet have the same level of assurance. Farmers who venture into the unknown world of hemp assume the risk of losing federal crop insurance or suffering legal implications.
“In Colorado, we don’t have the support of the federal government, so a lot of what we are doing is trailblazing through this knowing there are limitations with the feds,” said Chad Pfitzer, a member of the Hemp Committee and integrated solutions manager for Greeley’s 4Rivers Equipment.
“We don’t have a huge amount of market activity going on right now because of the limitations with the feds and particularly in banking and with crop insurance. I think we’re going to naturally run into a lot of reluctance at your typical grower level in places like Weld County.”
For ranchers such as Alfonzo Abeyta from Antonito, the risk of venturing into uncertain territory meant losing a shipment of 4,000 pounds of hemp at the port in San Diego. Seizures by DEA have prevented registered operations from importing certified seed and forced growers to rely on non-authorized distributors.
“We didn’t have any seed to plant. What was planted has been seed that has really not been certified,” Abeyta said.
“If we planted 30 pounds to the acre on 130 acres, we would have had enough to plant and even have had a little left over for other people.”
While entrepreneurs such as Abeyta have taken a gamble on hemp, Pfitzer said it is operations like his that could set Colorado ahead of the game nationally.
“We need those players to take the risk because they are the trailblazers. They are the 1 percent of the 1 percent really out there pushing the envelope and we’ve got to have some practical experience on the ground in order to get over some of these hurtles for all Colorado farmers,” Pfitzer said.
