11 Jobs From 1850 That Are Totally Extinct

The recent recession may have turned the job market on its head, but larger economic factors have drastically changed the U.S. market over the last century. The Industrial Revolution has all but eliminated once stable, middle-class jobs that were commonplace for your great-grandparents living in rural farmlands.

To find out what types of jobs were around before the Industrial Revolution, we combed through the occupational classification list from 1850, the first year the government collected data on what Americans do for work, provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We then compared it to a part of today's Census called the Standard Occupational Classifications, which identifies 31,000 active occupations in America.

Below are jobs from the past that are no longer recognized by the BLS:

1. Chimney-sweeps: Someone who inspects and cleans chimneys. The job typically requires a certain level of dexterity since it involves a lot of climbing, squatting, kneeling, and stretching.

2. Daguerreotypists: These people were the pioneers of photography using the camera obscura, an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen.  

3. Drover: Someone who drives cattle or sheep.

4. Hemp dressers: Someone who worked in the linen industry separating the coarse parts of hemp. They were also known as hacklers, the instruments they used to separate hemp.

5. Lapidaries: An artist who collects precious gemstones and minerals and forms them into decorative items.

6. Lathmaker: Someone who works to set up, operate, or tend wood sawing.

7. Match makers: Someone whose job consists of matching two people up, usually for the purpose of marriage.

8. Occultists: People who study magic, alchemy, extra-sensory perception, astrology, spiritualism, and divination.

9. Quarrymen: A man who works in or manages a quarry, which is a type of open pit mine for extracting rocks and minerals.

10. Shoe peg maker: This is a traditional form of shoe-making using pegged construction.

11. Salaeratus makers: A person who makes baking soda.

KY Justice Dept. Clears Way For Industrial Hemp

A ruling by the U.S. Justice Department will honor state laws on regulated marijuana sales, which green-lights production of industrial hemp in Kentucky.

State Agriculture Commissioner James Comer believes the ruling clarifies that the Federal Government does not and will not view Kentucky’s industrial hemp as an illegal product and they will not intervene on state passed laws on the issue.  Kentucky lawmakers did that when they passed Senate Bill 50.  Comer says growing hemp gives farmers another tool in the tool box.

“You can’t look at the market today you look at what the market can be ten years from now and you look at what other states are doing and everybody wants to be sustainable," he said. " Industrial hemp in other countries is replacing products that are currently being produced in the United States from plastic and trees.  So I believe as we look ahead and as we strive to be more sustainable and eco-friendly, industrial hemp is a crop that has unlimited potential.”

Comer, a leader in the national hemp movement said hemp will not only create a new agricultural economy for the state…it will actually help cut down marijuana growth.

“You could argue that if you want to get rid of marijuana in Kentucky, plant industrial hemp in different places because it cross pollinates and dilutes the THC in the marijuana so I think when you look at industrial hemp…it’s a win win situation for everyone…for law enforcement, for family farmers, for the taxpayers of Kentucky because we need to generate some economic activity desperately in our rural communities," Comer said.

Hemp used to be a leading crop in Kentucky and it can be grown in areas of the state where corn and other crops do not flourish.  It will also be a replacement for tobacco farmers who have continued to see their incomes dwindle.

Hemp, Lime And Local Timber At Scots Eco-Village

Two houses are nearing completion at a small newbuild eco village in the northwest of Scotland. Achabeag township has planning permission for 20 houses, which will be clustered together on sloping land overlooking the Sound of Mull. Of these 6 are designated as affordable housing, but with an average build cost of less than £100K none are likely to break the bank.

The first two dwellings are different in appearance but both are built to a very high standard – with exceptional levels of insulation, minimal heating requirements, met by a woodstove and off-peak electricity, heat storage in a thermal floor slab, and solar thermal panels for hot water. The full-height (single storey) internal living spaces have Douglas Fir structural frames and masses of natural light from roof glazing. Aluminium clad timber windows are virtually maintenance free. The timber for both was sourced mostly from local forests in the Lochaber area, the insulation – using recycled newspaper, collected by local schoolchildren – processed by Warmcel. Novel sloping exterior walls are influenced by local vernacular building styles while pagoda-style roofs give individuality. Developed by the Ardtornish Estate and Roderick James Architects LLP the Achabeag Township is intended to be a small sustainable community of highly energy efficient houses, within easy reach of the amenities of nearby Lochaline. The designs were born out of a Pattern Book created by the Roderick James practice that deliberately stipulates both a direction and coherent styles developed to ultimately create a township or village feel. The first property takes on a crescent-shaped form that curves to create a sheltered outdoor space that looks down the Sound of Mull. Dissecting the curve is a feature-glazed shard that serves to emphasise the properties dramatic views that are enjoyed through a fully glazed façade, whilst drawing light into the centre of the plan. The main living area is open plan. This maximises the amount of both space and light, whilst minimising the amount of corridor space between rooms to deliver both ecological and environmental advantages. In contrast to the crescent shaped form of its counterpart, the second property is aligned over a star shape layout, the form of which echoes the look of a traditional croft: a long and low, single storey building with white harled (rendered) walls, low eaves, dominant gable ends with chimney stacks, and small windows to the north and west. The properties two main ‘wings’ form a shallow V-shape and in doing so create a sheltered outdoor area that is accessible directly from the open plan living space. Located within close proximity to each other and enjoying a coastal aspect, the single storey dwellings feature the hemp based prefabricated wall system that is particularly suitable for use in low-rise buildings, deployed around an oak frame in this case. Hemcrete Projects low-carbon prefabricated building system, Hembuild, has been used for the main walls of the houses, which also feature both a natural slate and sedum green roof, plus lime-based render supplied by Hemcrete Projects’ group company, Lime Technology, In order to ensure that the visual appearance of both properties sit comfortably within the landscape, the external walls have been subtly tapered, making them feel instantly integral to their surrounding environment. Commenting on the decision to specify the Hembuild system, Peter Smith of Roderick James Architects said: “Hembuild ticks all of the boxes when it comes to delivering sustainable properties, and the system is ideally suitable for what are two totally different styled houses but which fulfil the requirements of a scheme where the use of natural materials and environmental sustainability are the order of the day.” Developed to deliver highly sustainable and energy efficient buildings, the product is based around a bio-composite building material made from hemp shiv (the woody core of industrial hemp) mixed with a lime-based binder – Tradical Hemcrete. This product, when used in conjunction with equally efficient hemp fibre insulation quilt delivers a groundbreaking combination of insulation and thermal inertia. Building using the system creates a substantial smoothing out of temperatures, thus reducing peak loads and the capital costs of an M&E system. The building fabric partially takes over the regulation of the internal conditions using the passive properties of Hemcrete, instead of using the active properties of the M&E system. This creates the potential for reducing capital and running costs. In addition to exceeding expectations based on conventional steady state U-values and standard thermal modelling, the process also sequesters carbon. This arises due to hemp capturing carbon dioxide during its rapid growth, whilst releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. The carbon is then locked up within the walls of the building to give a carbon negative solution.

Hemp Oil: An Update On Rick Simpson

Most individuals throughout the marijuana consuming community know about Rick Simpson from his ever popular “Run From The Cure”documentary which reveals his method for making the life-saving hashish oil that he refers to as Phoenix Tears. But what has Rick been up to since the initial release of his eye opening film?

After suffering a head injury back in 1997, Rick had discovered and started to use a highly concentrated form of hashish oil in order to bring him reprieve from his ailment. All hemp magazines on this planet are now telling their readers how to heal themselves with this wonderful medicine. If governments want to live in denial, it will be short-lived. We are gaining tens of thousands of followers every day. You cannot stop the truth,” Rick Simpson.

In May of 2012, the authorities in Canada dropped the charges against Rick and he has since traveled back to Nova Scotia after visiting 20 countries, throughout his period of avoiding prosecution, attempting to raise awareness regarding the medicinal benefits that the marijuana plant has to offer all mankind.

Now, temporarily back in Canada, Rick is continuing to speak to groups and organizations throughout North America about the healing powers of concentrated hemp oil. Rick has decided that he can’t remain in Canada regardless of the charges being dropped due to the fact that he has lost faith in the country’s government and law enforcement officials and will return to Europe once his speaking tour of British Columbia is complete.

Air Force Bans Greek Yogurt With Hemp Seeds Over Anti-Drug Policy Concerns

The Air Force warned personnel over the weekend to steer clear of a specific flavor of Chobani Greek yogurt that includes hemp seeds.

Hemp contains trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive ingredient also found in marijuana, classified alongside heroin and LSD as a Schedule I drug under federal law. The Air Force, as part of its anti-drug policy, added hemp seed oil products and hemp seed to a list of forbidden substances in 1999, over concerns that they could confuse the results of drug tests regularly given to service members.

Chobani's Blueberry Power Flip is the latest victim of that prohibition. The Air Force made clear that yogurt flavors without hemp were still fine to eat.

“The Air Force has not restricted military members from consuming Chobani Greek yogurt; rather, only Chobani yogurt that contains hemp seed or hemp seed oil is prohibited, just as any product which contains or is derived from hemp seed or hemp seed oil is prohibited,” said Capt. Adam Koudelka, the legal adviser for the Air Force Drug Testing Laboratory at the Air Force Medical Operations Agency at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, according to the Air Force Times.

Here's the relevant passage of Air Force policy:

Studies have shown that products made with hemp seed and hemp seed oil may contain varying levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), an active ingredient of marijuana which is detectable under the Air Force Drug Testing Program. In order to ensure military readiness, the ingestion of products containing or products derived from hemp seed or hemp seed oil is prohibited. Failure to comply with the mandatory provisions of this paragraph by military personnel is a violation of Article 92, UCMJ.

Jessica DiGennaro, a spokeswoman for Chobani, told the Air Force Times that Blueberry Power Flip contains about 10 grams of hemp seeds.

An independent study by Vote Hemp, a nonprofit hemp advocacy group, found that eating a half-pound of commercial hulled hemp seeds would be unlikely to cause someone to exceed the federal limit of 50 parts of THC per billion. People who regularly consumed smaller amounts of hemp seeds mostly were below the limit, the research found. A half-pound is more than 20 times the amount of hemp seeds found in a 5.3-ounce cup of Chobani Blueberry Power Flip.

DiGennaro said that based on other research about hemp seeds with standard amounts of THC, it would be unlikely for the Chobani product to result in a failed drug test. But she told the Times that Chobani couldn't confirm "with certainty" how its yogurt would affect Air Force drug testing.
